The Brain Injury Association of Washington (BIAWA) informed members earlier this month that its Board of Directors had decided to sever the organizations affiliation with the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA), the oldest and largest brain injury victims advocacy organization in the United States.
Both of these organizations do a great job of providing resources and support to brain injury victims and each group has its own strengths and areas of emphasis, said brain injury attorney Chris Davis. This move appears beneficial for brain injury victims in Washington State. They will likely have an independent, local organization focusing on services that meet the needs of victims in our state as well as a strong national organization with a more broad view.
There were reportedly a number of reasons for the boards ultimate decision, but the driving force behind the departure was the BIAWAs desire to focus more on local services to brain and head injury victims themselves.
The state-level organization has dedicated more than 30 years to the support and advocacy for Washington State residents who have been traumatized by a brain injury, and has been recognized as a leader in raising brain injury awareness throughout the state, region and country.
The BIAAs mission is focused on brain injury prevention, research, treatment, and raising awareness and understanding of brain injury.
BIAWA is an independently incorporated non-profit organization, and the only financial ties that the group had to the BIAA was primarily membership dues.
In a July 5 statement to members the organization said, While there were a number of areas of concern, paramount was BIAAs recent activities which appear to be a shifting away from the prioritization of supporting state efforts that serve individuals with brain injuries, their families and caregivers.
